Programme Note:

Opus 2 explores human magnetism, a constant struggle between attraction and repulsion, attachment and detachment. The protagonist experiences brief episodes of light that quickly succumb to darkness. He fights to force himself into a necessary but painful detachment, failing invariably. Ultimately, the main theme pulls him back into isolation, forcing an uneasy acceptance as the cycle continues.

Performance Notes:

Begin at the recommended tempo. Subsequent returns of the A theme do not need to strictly mirror the original speed.
To ease the time signature change for the B section (bar 15), use the sextuplets in the transition (bars 7–14) as a guide. Feeling each 6-note group as a temporary bar of 3/4 (six quavers) will help you establish the correct tempo for the B section.

Music, when soft voices die,

Vibrates in the memory—

Odours, when sweet violets sicken,

Live within the sense they quicken.

Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,

Are heaped for the belovèd's bed;

And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone,

Love itself shall slumber on.

Programme Note:

For my Opus 1, an inner instinct told me to write an art song, even though I had little to no experience in writing music for solo voice. To find the right text, I turned to my teacher, Mr. Augustine Paul, who gave me a collection of great poems to choose from. Out of all of them, this one touched me. It's unique and not a cliché. As someone with a soft voice, I could easily relate to it. Music helps me express more about my inner world than words alone. Themes like death and immortality have always interested me, and this poem talks about death in such a beautiful, positive way. I would like to thank the unknown force(s) that gifted me with music, my parents for letting me follow my passion, and my teachers for illuminating my path.
